McDowells

Reading this news item brought back memories of this movie and how they shut down Wendy's for a few months. Can anyone name any other movies filmed in Elmhurst?

Now we are cooking!
imdb.com lists U.S. Marshals (1998) with Tommy Lee Jones and Wesley Snipes as being filmed in Elmhurst, but I saw it on cable and can't seem to remember any Elmhurst locations.

US Marshalls did have a scene where on of the officers got shot and rushed to Elmhurst Hospital! Recently that new movie with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan had a scene where they stood in the Metro Motel, not sure if that's Elmhurst though.

Sadness...If I remember correctly, the fast food place you're talking about was "Wetsons"...

How many of you remember when Fairyland Amusement park was located where presently sits the Queens Ctr Mall...

There was also a Howard Johnson's about where the McDonald's is today...As I recall they both disappeared in the late 60's - early 70's...

When you looked eastward down Queens Blvd in those days, the biggest building you could see was the firehouse in Forest Hills (I think about 108th Street)...

The wrong man had some great shots of the elevated subway lines and entrance at 74th st.
Jerry Seinfeld show had shots of Elmhurst Hospital.
Spiderman movie was shot there I think but I did not reconize anything
I loved Fairland- I remember when the old lumbermill nearby burned down.
Anyone re the old cementary before they built Macys? Or the old courthouse close to Bway and Queens blvd- Wonder if my old scouthall which was a church across from the old library is still standing?

i'm raised in Elmhurst...after wetson's was Arthur treachers fish and chips, then nathans, then Roy Rogers...spiderman was filmed in woodside/sunnyside. the Metro Motel is in Elmhurst..reserved for Red Cross Emergency victims, welfare shelter and short stays..the old Church across from the library is still standing and active..if the one your talking about is on the corner of corona ave and Bway...if you mean the one directly across bway that's the old Saint James parish hall..and it's a elmhurst land mark, it's been restored and looks great...hope i was a little helpfull..Jody

I remember "Wetsons". I liked their food. The McDowells which was used in "Coming to America" was not a "Wendys". It was a "McDonalds". I was driving a cab at the time and I had a 40 minute wait till a pick up at LAG airport. I decided to get a burger at McDonalds and when I pulled up saw it was McDowells. First thing I thought was that McDonalds was going to sue them. I knew nothing about the movie at the time. I drove up to the drive thur and started honking waiting for someone to answer. They said they were closed and till this day I still wonder if it might have been Eddie M I spoke with and they all got a big laugh at of me not knowing.

Frank McG, You are incorrect....MCDowell's was indeed the Wendy's restaurant and not the McDonald's that was two blocks further

Bourne Ultimatum with Matt Damon has a scene where he drives into the Airway Motel thats on Astoria Blvd and 82nd Street. This isnt mentioned on any website. I just realized it while watching the movie. Very obvious if you see the scene.

i was 16 yrs old driving with my mom in the car and as were were preparing to make a left on queens blvd onto Broadway to go home (52nd ave & Justice Ave) i noticed Wendy's was no longer Wendy's and the sign on top of the Radio shack building was for soul glow...i looked at my mom and said what the hell is soul glow...lol..and who's McDowell? she said i guess it's a new restaurant, and a new jerry curll product...lmao... a few weeks later my best friend comes to my house and says Eddie Murphy is down the block at the new restaurant i think they're filming a movie...it was January and snow everywhere and it was the best few weeks of our lives...we had some much fun just standing around and watching..

Lived on Ketcham St from 1946 to 1974. Great neighborhood. I remember as a child a huge fire on Elmhurst Ave. it was several old Victorian
homes circa 1900. Burnt to the ground, the lot was vacant for years. They were located between Broadway and Ketcham as MacNish street had not yet been built. The homes were located about 50 yards from the old Bostelmens deli next to Hanscoms bakery. Today there is an apartment there called the Wingate 84-25 Elmhurst Ave. The LIRR station was next to Neufelds Funeral Home we use to play stickball against the station wall and put pennies on the rr tracks. As it was about 1958 we thought we could do anything. Don’t forget General diaper service alongside the LIRR between Bway and QB. Long before Pampers. Fairyland was great fun and you could get a White Castle there for 12 cents.
