Elmhurst
Elmhurst was first known as Middleburgh, and later as Hastings, when it was established in 1652. Colonists began to refer to Hastings as “new town” in order to distinguish it from Queen’s first and abandoned settlement of Maspeth (established in 1642, abandoned in 1644). In 1683, the name Newtown was officially given to the village and township. In 1896 Cord Meyer jr. successfully rallied to change the town’s name to Elmhurst (meaning “a grove of elms”) in an effort to disassociate his development from the notoriously polluted Newtown Creek.

I remember the Wandowenock fire house museum on Broadway (closed about 1960). My grandfather, great grandfather & great-great grandfather were firemen, and Chiefs. (Town of Newtown).
I am a direct descendant of Rev. John Moore, and my grandfather had many fond memories of the Moore homestead (which was owned by his cousins, the Perrys.) Many of my ancestors are buried in Elmhurst--the Moores and Rikers at St James--the Brinckerhoffs at the Dutch Reformed Church. I have tons of info. and recollections of the town and environs.

My great-grandfather (Henry Grafelman) was a fireman with Newtown. I have his badge and a photo of him in uniform. I am trying to research the department and learn more about it's history.

My great, great uncle, John Heeg was a member of the department. It was mentioned in his obituary.
